I got my 310CT yesterday and what a great device. While it doesn't have spoken feedback, it has so much more than the Nike+ system. I can display four data fields on the watch at one time and it is still large enough to see. For my run today I set it up to show me:
* time (into the run)
* heart rate
* current pace
* average pace
The last 2 were very handy for me keeping up my pace towards the end of the run (while still being careful with my hamstring).

I ran with both the my iPod and the Garmin and interestingly they both ended up with the same distance and average pace. I uploaded the data from both to Nike+ and you can see them in Slowgeek: iPod and Garmin.

I see I'm going to get much more value from the Garmin.

Is it possible to delete runs from Slowgeek? The date of my iPod was set to future by my child and now one of my runs is made one year ahead. I was able to upload the run correctly by changing the dates in it as well as to remove it from nikeplus, but I still have it here in Slowgeek.

It got to the point that I'd have issues even starting the workout, let alone stopping the workout. I ended up buying a WatchRemote to make starting, pausing and ending the workout more reliable. If it is raining, the Touch goes inside a ziplock bag in the armband which didn't help, but didn't seem to make it any worse.

I was forced to upgrade to iOS 4.0.2 last week when my 2nd generation iPod Touch hung. Not only is Nike+ very flaky now, but battery life on the iPod is almost non-existent. My iPod went from 100% to 55% in 10 hours and I wasn't even using it. Last night it went from 95% to 20% in 6 hours when not in use.

I have read the only way to solve the battery problems is to restore to a new iPod (i.e. lose all settings, apps and music). You can then sync apps and music back, but all settings, passwords, emails, documents in apps, etc. will be gone.

I'll have a Garmin Forerunner 310XT as soon as my dealer gets stock. I hope it will be soon as I'm now sick of the Nike+ system after I was forced to upgrade to iOS 4.02. It is now next to useless. I'm lucky if I get spoken feedback and when I do, it usually cuts out part way through. Additionally, the battery life on my iPod is now so short it has made the whole device unusable online.

With the 310XT, I'll also be getting a foot pod for running on a track/treadmill (GPS is not all that accurate on a track and not at all on a treadmill) and a bike cadence/speed sensor for the bike. The latter should help me to change to a higher gear sooner as I have a tendency to stay in a low gear which gives me knee and lower hamstring problems.

As I'm recovering from a hamstring injury, it will be nice to be able to get reliable pace data while running.

I just picked up a Garmin 305 because I got tired of recalibrating the sensor for temperature etc every few months (a significant factor in Edmonton when you run in the morning) and I must say that I'm very impressed. The accuracy is scary - to the point of seeing which side of the street you are running on! If you are just starting, the Nike system is fine, but if you want to get more serious or are into more than just running, the Garmin system is really the one to get.

I had my first Garmin run today and used http://awsmithson.com/tcx2nikeplus/ to covert it to Nike/Slowgeek so this way, I don't have to compromise the community that I have in Nike for the additional analytics that Garmin gives.

Nah... that's only a small part of the problem. It appears that Nike don't understand what runners want. Just looking at the Nike+ site makes that obvious and is the reason why Slowgeek exists as a site.

The Nike+ system could be so much more than it is.

An iPhone can do it all (sometimes with a little bit of jailbreaking....)

Not with Nike+. Fortunately, there will be some options very soon, and they won't require jailbreaking.

digifit and fisica should open up the iPhone/iPod/iPad and make them potentially as good as Garmin, at least functionwise.

The main limitation then becomes the interface - the limitation on the buttons. Certainly, the touch interface allows for extra buttons, but how well do they work when your sweaty and the screen is inside an armband or similar. I have lots of problems with the touch interface with my iPod when I',m running - so much so, I bought a watch remote because I was sick of not being able to pause/stop my workouts at the end of my runs. Ideally, for running you'd want some kind of wrist strap to hold the iPhone so you can see the screen with all the nice data being displayed.

That would be true if Nike had any idea what they were doing and Apple cared even a small bit. As it is, the solution is half-arsed. It could be so much better.

I don't currently have a Forerunner, but am seriously thinking about getting a Forerunner 310XT. While I enjoy the simplicity and relative convenience of the Nike+ system, I know that the distances and so paces are not very accurate with the Nike+ (and most foot pod based systems). I also really want a proper heart rate monitoring system - both from a training perspective and also for the health of my heart.

I have read very good things about the 310XT. It is GPS based and meant to be very accurate. It doesn't suffer from pace/stride length/hills/terrain. It also has integrated heart rate monitoring with alarms to tell you when you're in or out of target zones.

Here's a review: Garmin Forerunner 310XT In Depth Review

Here's an example of that data you get: sample (puts Nike+ to shame).

And you can still upload your data to Nike+ so it can be displayed on Slowgeek: Garmin Forerunner tcx file to Nike+ Converter & Uploader

That's correct. I'd love to know the pause duration as well, but it is not recorded anywhere. You can try to work it out by subtracting the start time from the synch time, but that assumes you synched your run as soon as you got back, of course.

I don't believe that information is stored at all. The clock stops when you pause and only starts again when you resume. There's nothing in the data (that I can see) that records anything while the workout is paused.

is there any way to analyze Nike+ sensor data to determine how long the ipod was paused before resuming the workout? Normally, I just pause the unit when at a red light & dont really care about the 40 or so seconds that have elapsed but yesterday I paused at a water fountain & then didnt resume until I took another water break after another 3 or so miles. My total mileage was listed at 7.7 but was trying to figure out my total mileage by dividing my pace by the mysterious elapsed time of the "pause".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well.. the real benefit of a heart rate monitor (as the name suggests) is to tell you your heart rate while you are actually exercising. i.e. so you can increase or decrease effort as appropriate. A graph of what your heart rate was AFTER the run is interesting, but largely misses the point.

rlerdorf said:
It's not actually very hard to do. The only hard part is figuring out how to display the data. Where would you like to see the data? As a separate weight over time graph in the "Summary Graphs" section? And it should obviously not be public by default, so I would also need a privacy setting for it.

How about a separate tab, eg 'My Weight' or 'My Stats' (I'm not great at thinking about names for things.) If people who don't use the scale could enter maybe a couple of stats manually (eg, weight, body fat%) as well, that woul be cool and everyone could get something out of it.

If you could integrate the http://www.tanita.com/en/bc1000/ Tanita scale that works with Garmin that would be awesome, but it looks like the Withings one is far more widely supported.
