I spent a couple of hours tonight adding a shoe tracker. Hopefully it is quite obvious how to make it go. Let me know if you have any problems with it.

And yes, you do of course have to be logged in to configure it.

Hey rlerdorf...Love the shoe tracker meter. However, the date field is giving me problems. I try to select September 1st, 2008, and when I submit the info, it has the date as December 1st, 1969 and the meter is in red...which I would fully expect after all those years!!

Yeah, I see there is a problem selecting the date in IE. I'm on my way to Taipei today. I probably won't have time to fix it. The quick solution is to log in with Firefox or Safari, or any browser other than Internet Explorer and it will work perfectly.

I am logged in through Firefox and I am getting the same 1969 problem, although mine says Dec 31, 1969. It's a great idea, I can't wait until it works. Have a great trip.

Yup, I figured it out. I had a debug line in there that only works if you have a special Firefox extension called Firebug installed. That's gone now and it should be working in all browsers now. I see a little bit of uglyness in IE still that I need to fix, but you should be able to set the date in IE as well now.

Yeah, I have a slight bug for user names with spaces in them. I'll track it down soon. It still recorded your date correctly though, so it is purely cosmetic.

Hrm.. Actually, it looks like it was because you changed your nickname recently and my script to re-synch the nicknames hadn't run yet. Fixed now.

Hey, sorry to bother you again, but my shoe tracker says that I have done 534 miles.... I have only done about 400....

Yeah, it was showing it in km but had a "miles" label on it. Fixed.

Seems that I definitely needed a new pair of running shoes. As I bought a pair of Brooks Trance 8 this time , I need to wait for my shoe pouch to arrive from the US. Great work on the site improvements!

Wow, 1700km in one pair of shoes? I think that is some kind of record.

i have a 4 shoe rotation, so the tracker probably won't work, correct?

I have pondered that. It would require that you manually tag each run with some sort of shoe identifier or else there is no way for me to know which shoes were used for each run. Unless you had 4 different sensors, then I suppose I could tie an empedID to each shoe, but both seem like a lot of effort.

Great addition to the slowgeek family of products I'm in the same boat as tex. Maybe you could have a start and stop date for each shoe entry. then you could skip dates when you used another shoe in the rotation?

What exactly do you mean by "skip dates" there? If you alternate between shoes every run, you would have to go into the shoe tracker each time and enter the start/stop date as the same day? What if you do a morning and an evening run on the same day in different shoes? I think the shoe would need to be tied to the run itself to keep it simple. The tricky part would be how to make that as painless process.

I guess there are two scenarios for those using multiple pairs of shoes:
    1. Using different shoes for seasonal reasons (like tougher shoes in winter and lighter ones otherwise). These users would choose which pair was used for the last run and this selection would then stay until they change it again.
    2. Rotating multiple shoes on a regular basis. In this case they would have to set it every time and it probably wouldn't be too easy to do; you're right about that.

yeah, I guess what I was thinking was good in thought, but would be hard to implement, you would need to add in times along with dates and it would probably get pretty messy unless you could add extra fields that someone could enter a number for whatever pair of shoes they had.

Ahh, but if you regularly rotate shoes regularly the shoe tracker is still helpful. You can track the oldest pair and at least have an idea of the miles (divided by the pairs in rotation). Ok maybe that's a stretch.

I just like the idea that right on my slowgeek page it says the date I started using the pair of sneakers I am tracking, even though I rotated out my old pair for a little while and occasionally use a different pair, I still find it to be a neat addition.

Yup, but it would still be cool to have a really easy way to indicate a second pair. The absolute easiest way would be if you had separate sensors. Each run contains the EmpedID of the sensor, but then you have to re-synch the other sensor every time you change shoes. Which isn't a big deal, but could still get annoying. Would be nice if you could be synched against 2 sensors at the same time.
